USPS Stamp Series

OVERVIEW

The task for this project was to create an original United States Postal Service stamp series that honors a topic different from you and your lived experience. I chose to showcase Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, because it was a holiday I’d heard a lot about but was unfamiliar with its true meaning.

Though it is overlooked and not recognized as much as other holidays, there are many Mexican families who celebrate the Day of the Dead in the United States. I chose to highlight four symbols and traditions that are important to this holiday — papel picado (a decorative craft), música (music and songs), calaveras (painted skulls), and ofrendas (altars). Through bright illustrations, this stamp series will encourage people to acknowledge the significance of Dia de Los Muertos in the United States.
